Ramadhan in a tent

Nurmi, 40, and her family survived the tsunami and now she lives in a tent in Punge Jorong, Indonesia, with her husband and three children.

A normal day in her life consists of cooking, washing, ironing and caring for her children, Nedi Rinaldi, 17, Khalid Mahlil, 15, and Siti Jumaidar, 13.

Food parcels

After years of economic, political and natural disasters, 34% of children in today’s Indonesia are malnourished and 27% of the population live below the national poverty level.

In response to this, Islamic Relief has been distributing Ramadan and Qurbani food parcels to the country’s poor since 2000.

Nurmi and her family were beneficiaries of one of these Ramadhan Food Parcels. In the Islamic holy month of Ramadhan, which Nurmi describes as being “very different and full of blessing and mercy,” the food she received was another blessing.

For a family that have problems finding the money to buy food, the parcel came as a great relief. The family enjoyed frying the rice that was included with the parcel so much that as she told IR workers, “The food package I received lasted for one and a half months.”

In looking towards this year’s Ramadhan, Nurmi added, “We hope that those who donate the food packages continue to do so.”

IRW in Indonesia

Despite the family’s poverty, Nurmi remains optimistic for the future of her children and looks towards better education. Because of this, Islamic Relief has rebuilt 8 schools since the tsunami of 2004 and currently provides education and school meals to over 2,000 children.
