Smiles for Magdi’s children

Ongoing conflict in the Palestinian Territories has plunged many people deeper into poverty, leaving thousands dependent on humanitarian aid. Islamic Relief’s projects in the Palestinian Territories include water, sanitation, health, education and livelihoods.

During Ramadhan, IR staff in the Palestinian Territories distribute food parcels to some of the poorest and most vulnerable members of society.

Zero income

Magdi, 35, lives in the north of Gaza city. He has six children but is too ill to earn a living. He suffers from kidney problems and has to spend 5 days a week receiving treatment in hospital.

“My monthly income is zero”, says Magdi, “My family has no hope and I cannot do anything to change their reality.”

Magdi’s family has now joined Islamic Relief’s Family Sponsorship programme. IR pays their electricity and water bills, provides his children with school uniform and stationery and ensures that they have enough medicine.

Ramadhan

“Islamic Relief knocked at my door to help me and my children, who were hungry,” Magdi remembers tearfully, “They sponsored my family and provided us with a Ramadhan food parcel which means a lot to me and my children.”

In 2006, Islamic Relief distributed 18,500 food packs in 11 areas across Palestinian Territories.

Each food pack contained 4.8 kg rice, 3kg white beans, 3kg fool (type of bean), 3kg lentils, 1kg macaroni, 2kg dates, 4.8kg sugar, 0.9kg tomato paste, 2 litres oil, 1 litre olive oil and1kg halawa and 2kg taheena(sweet foods).

“I thank Allah and then Islamic Relief for their help,” says Magdi, “I cannot forget the smile on my children’s faces when they brought us a parcel during Ramadhan.”
