A food pack for Azmiati

Azmiati lives with her four children and her sister in a tent in Krung Cut, Indonesia.

On a normal day, she tries to find oysters to feed the family but her day is always tinged with sorrow. “I can only see the sky and the earth because we still live in the tent. What we think about is when we will have a house”.

Tsunami

Life for Azmiati is similar to many others in the region. The tsunami of December 2004 wreaked havoc across Aceh, Indonesia's northernmost province. An estimated 130,000 people were killed there, while over 600 communities were completely wiped out. More than a third of those who died were children.

The destructive effect of the tsunami on Indonesia was enormous. An estimated 500,000 people were left homeless, around 38,600 students and 2,500 teachers were killed, and 800,000 people lost their sources of livelihood, most of them fishermen and farmers.

When asked what her favourite item of food in the parcel was Amziati replied “Alhamdulillah…any halal food”. Because of the need for food, the family are grateful for any help they receive. They hope that they will receive another one this year.

Most importantly, Azmiati expressed her hope that Islamic Relief would help her get back to work. She had similar aspirations for her children, “I hope that our children can have a higher education and gain religious knowledge so they can contribute to their parents and the country as well”.

“We really appreciate what you gave, we hope that Allah will double the reward” said Azmiati of the donor of her Islamic Relief Ramadan Food Parcel.

Islamic Relief has worked in Indonesia since 2000, distributing food and assisting people affected by natural disasters. In Aceh province, IR has provided school equipment for children as well as building schools, hospitals, homes and helping thousands of people return to work.
